The Urgent Challenge in Indian Education System
The lack of personalised academic support, leading to an over-reliance on private tuitions.
According to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER 2023), more than 30% of students take private tuition, yet 70% of that tuition time is spent merely resolving doubts.
This dependency arises from overcrowded classrooms, where the student-teacher ratio is a shocking 60:1, overworked teachers burdened with administrative tasks, and a lack of well-trained educators.

Competitive Analysis
While Vedantu offers high interaction through one-on-one tutoring, and Unacademy provides live interactive classes, BYJU'S relies heavily on pre-recorded content. None seem to effectively combine different interaction modalities in an affordable package.
There's a clear trade-off between personalisation and price. The most personalised options or comprehensive packages are either expensive or limited in scope.
Most platforms offer limited or low mental well-being support, despite the high stress associated with competitive exam preparation.

Four dominant EdTech tutoring platforms were analysed which were also highlighted in Survey
Interviews and Content
The user group I decided to interview was school students ranging from 12 to18 years old who are attending regular school and tuitions and also preparing for board exams.
I arranged 8 interviews, 5 on zoom meeting and 3 on phone calls.
I had approximately an hour and a half of audio and video recording to transcript after each interview. I decided to it myself with the help of AI transcription tool MARVIN.
Once the transcript was done, I needed to tweak some sentences to make it clearer and understandable. Almost all the students were Indian speakers so I needed to make some changes without altering the essence nor the personality of the student.

What I found ?
Students struggle with delayed doubt resolution, leading to stress and reduced retention. They need instant accessible support to stay confident and on track with their learning.
Long and repetitive tutoring sessions mimic school, causing boredom and disengagement. Interactive, concise, and visually engaging content is preferred to make learning enjoyable and effective
While students grasp theoretical knowledge, they lack confidence in applying it to real-world scenarios. Hands-on, application-based learning and mentorship are essential to bridge this gap.
Explanations in students’ preferred language improve comprehension and reduce frustration, making complex topics easier to understand and retain.
“I go from school to tutoring, and by the end of the day, I’m just tired. I barely have any energy left to do my homework.”
Shivi
“I usually wait for my tutoring sessions to get help. But waiting makes me more stressed because by the time I get the answers, I’ve almost forgotten my questions.”
Aashima
“Sometimes, when tutors explain things, I get lost. If it was in my language, maybe it would make more sense to me.”
Gaurav
“I know the theory, but I don’t feel confident about doing the actual work. In conversations, I feel like I’m at a disadvantage.”
Sai
THE UNSEEN COST
While conducting this interview, one key point that stood out is which goes beyond Academics. It is the hidden toll on students and parents, the countless hours and significant financial resources squandered in transit and traditional tuitions.
SYSTEMS MODELLING
Understanding the systems
Ecosystem mapping was done view the system of student's learning development from various levels micro to macro, in order to gauge the interrelationships between key actors within the system as well as their influence on student's academic growth.

ECOSYSTEM
Stakeholder Mapping
A detailed ecosystem mapping with key stakeholders towards the core was done to establish connections through a more thorough lens.

A STEP CLOSER
Design Brief
To reimagine how students access personalized academic support by enabling doubt resolution that is timely, judgment-free, and independent of private tuitions.
PRODUCT AND DESIGN DECISIONS
PRODUCT GOALS
Restore students’ confidence in learning independently by enabling them to ask and resolve doubts anytime.
Reduce cognitive and emotional dependence on tuitions through accessible and familiar tech-based tools.
Promote equitable access to learning support for students across socio-economic and geographic boundaries.
JOBS TO BE DONE
By keeping the pain points and the needs in considering , we defined our features.

Design Process
After ideating the solutions. I sketched initial concept ideas. I used Figma because it supports easy collaboration and is versatile in terms of wire-framing and prototyping.
It took 4 iterations to get the final high fidelity prototype. Below is the breakdown and my progress with each iteration:
1st iteration - Initial sketches incorporating all the features and recommendations
2nd iteration - Incorporating feedback from professor - aligning elements, minimising clicks, creating visual hierarchy in low-fi prototype
3rd iteration - Adding color scheme, icons, logos and interactions
4th iteration - Final design touch-ups, and green signal from professor and visiting guests from the industry

Feedback
Usability Testing
Tested the low-fi prototype with 8 students (grade 6-9 students ). Key insights emerged around layout clarity, visual hierarchy, quiz section, tags to educational reel and lack of personality in tutors.
Clear Tutors action with info ofteaching personality

Instead of "All subjects", introduce practice section for deep learning experience

Replacing the reel feel to more learning, no like and saves. Added tags and conversation section

Visual Identity
Learning that makes you want to read
I wanted to evoke humanistic qualities creating an approachable learning space, while having exceptional legibility across screens ensures content remains accessible. The font's subtle character variations allow our platform to feel warm and personalised without sacrificing the clarity essential for effective education.

The App Experience
Creating a simple, friendly and real-time learning experience
I wanted to design something for students from every corner of India, regardless of technical background. The interface needed. to feel like a conversation in a friend's living room rather than a digital classroom.
Real-time tutoring videos create genuine connections, while the intentionally simple design ensures nothing stands between you and your personal learning journey making education accessible to everyone.

What did I learn ?
A Local Problem Can Have a Global Impact
Initially designed for Indian students, EduTake revealed that learning gaps exist worldwide. The need for affordable, personalized AI tutoring extends beyond India, making this concept globally scalable. Recognizing this broadened my perspective on designing for diverse educational ecosystems.
Communication Across Diverse Audiences
Interviewing students of different ages, backgrounds, and languages refined my research and empathy skills. Engaging with younger students required simpler visuals, interactive approaches, and patience, shaping my ability to conduct more inclusive and sensitive user research.
Iteration Through the Lens of Today’s
Students
Seeing students interact with my designs proved that assumptions don’t always align with reality. Their shorter attention spans, preference for interactivity, and expectation for instant responses pushed me to adapt, making the AI tutor more conversational, modular, and engaging.
Presenting Like It’s Shark Tank
Pitching EduTake in three rounds to design industry professionals was a crash course in storytelling and persuasion. I learned to simplify complex ideas, articulate design decisions clearly, and build confidence in presenting—a crucial skill for bringing ideas to life.
